Trauttmansdorff’s Student Tours Kick Off Again - 24.09.13

The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle welcome school groups to explore the gardens once again in September and October. On Thursday 19 September, two classes from Fabio Filzi Middle School in Laives (Leifers) kicked off this season’s special school tours in exploration of the 2013 International Garden of the Year.

Around 80 schools and over 2,000 students gain inspiration from the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle every season through a very special kind of program: custom-designed tours for school classes teach botanical subjects through the use of experimentation and crafts. The gardens themselves are the classroom, together with the special exhibition spaces. At the same time, Trautmansdorff provides teachers with suggestions to help them further reinforce various botanical subjects at school. For the first time this year, registration may be done online via the Trauttmansdorff website, which also provides information regarding available dates. The educational program is open to all students in the third year of primary school or above, and is adapted to the different age groups.

In September and October 2013, there are two special tours for schools: “Magic Plants – Plant Magic” takes students and teachers on a quest for superstitions, myths and magic in and around the Forbidden Garden. Eerie, intriguing stories and botanical clarificationa keep learning interesting. The other school tour is entitled “Living Fossils: Vegetarian Food for Dinosaurs."

Together with the garden guides, living fossils are put under the microscope. Here is Wollemia nobilis.

This was the tour that took two classes from Fabio Filzi Middle School in Laives – the first participants this year – on an exciting journey through time into the world of plants. “The students are enthusiastic, and so are we teachers. We’ve participated in the educational tours at the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle before, with several different classes, and we keep coming back,” says Daniela Abram from Fabio Filzi Middle School in Laives.

With the start of the 2014 season, the educational program is being supplemented by another special tour related to the theme of the 2014 botanical special exhibition.
