Invasive Neophytes

Intentional or not, the introduction of invasive alien into the local ecosystem is a process that cannot easily be reversed.

Due to their rapid spread, invasive neophytes compete with native flora, posing a threat to local flora, the economy and even to humans.

One such example is the poisonous giant hogweed plant, which can cause severe skin burns if touched.

Sufficient care should be exercised when handling neophytes. Some plants should be avoided, while others are even prohibited.

In 2023, the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle are dedicated to the theme of invasive neophytes. A tour through various locations of the Gardens will highlight 35 kinds of invasive plant species, showing their negative impact on the environment, with advice on how to counter their proliferation.
