General description
Camellias are among the most refined early-flowering shrubs. Their evergreen foliage provides a deep green backdrop for showy blooms, often reminiscent of roses in both form and structure. Varieties range from simple, open flowers to perfectly formed double blooms. They are most effective in calm, shaded garden settings, where the contrast between dark leaves and bright flowers appears particularly elegant. In the Palm Forest at Trauttmansdorff, they benefit from a microclimate similar to the humid regions of East Asia, their native habitat.
Care
Camellias require slightly acidic, humus-rich soil with consistent moisture. Waterlogging and lime can lead to chlorosis. A sheltered position is important, as the flowers are sensitive to cold and wind. Pruning is minimal, usually limited to light thinning. During hot summers, regular watering helps ensure the formation of flower buds for the following season.
Special features & use in the home garden
Camellias are well suited to shaded courtyards, entrances, and garden areas planted with rhododendrons or ferns. Their evergreen foliage provides structure year-round. Their early flowering creates a distinctive moment in the garden, when most plants are still dormant.
In Trauttmansdorff
In the Palm Grove, among exotic species, camellias enhance the subtropical atmosphere. The combination of evergreen foliage, palms, and East Asian-inspired blooms creates a particularly evocative setting. The mild microclimate supports winter flowering, making them a seasonal highlight.
