General description

Japanese ornamental cherries are among the most iconic signs of spring. Their white or pink blossoms appear before the leaves, covering the crown in soft, cloud-like layers. In Japanese culture, they symbolise beauty, renewal, and the fleeting nature of life. At Trauttmansdorff, they mark one of the most striking moments of the season, when the delicate flowers and spring light create a particularly evocative atmosphere.

Care

They thrive in sunny positions with well-drained, fairly rich soil. A sheltered spot helps ensure more consistent flowering. Pruning should be kept to a minimum, as these trees respond poorly to cuts and heal slowly. Any basal shoots should be removed. During dry summer periods, regular watering is recommended.

Special features & use in the home garden

They are most effective as standalone specimens, where their flowering can be fully appreciated. Varieties with a slightly weeping habit or double flowers are especially striking. Well suited to front gardens, entrances, or smaller green spaces. The effect is enhanced by underplanting with spring bulbs or ground cover.
