General description
Irises are a symbol of Mediterranean elegance. Their characteristic flower structure, with upright standards and drooping falls, gives them a distinctive presence, enhanced by a remarkable colour range—from pure white to violet, bronze, yellow, and nearly black. At Trauttmansdorff, iris plantings cover entire terraces with almost graphic precision: the upright, sword-like leaves create vertical lines, while the striking flowers repeat in rhythmic patterns.
Care
Irises prefer sunny locations but tolerate light shade. Depending on the species, they require humus-rich, moist to wet soils. Marsh irises thrive along water edges, while bearded irises need drier root zones. Clumps should be divided every few years to maintain vigour. Spent flower stems can be removed, while the foliage remains until winter and is cut back afterward.
Special features & use in the home garden
Irises are ideal for natural ponds, water edges, rain gardens, and moist gravel plantings. They provide strong vertical accents in perennial beds and serve as an early nectar source. Combined with grasses or peonies, they create elegant, site-appropriate plantings. Their reflection on water surfaces is one of the most striking visual effects in garden design.
