General description
Rhododendrons are among the defining shrubs of spring. Their large, funnel-shaped flowers form dense clusters, creating vivid patches of colour in partially shaded areas. Early varieties begin flowering in early April, marking the start of the rhododendron season. At Trauttmansdorff, they shape the woodland gardens with strong contrasts against the fresh green tones of surrounding vegetation, sometimes creating almost exotic scenes.
Care
They require acidic, humus-rich soil with good drainage. They do not tolerate waterlogging or prolonged dryness. Mulching helps maintain soil moisture and stability. Pruning is usually unnecessary; older plants can be lightly cut back if needed. Consistent watering in summer is important for the formation of next year’s flower buds.
Special features & use in the home garden
Rhododendrons are valuable structural plants for partially shaded areas. They suit heath gardens, woodland settings, and more formal entrance areas. With varieties in white, pink, purple, yellow, and orange, they allow for rich and atmospheric colour compositions.
In Trauttmansdorff
In spring, the Forets of the World are transformed into a vibrant display of rhododendron colour.
