150 Years of Julius Payer-Hut

Historical images provide insights into the vibrant history of the hut

Impressive, the Julius-Payer-hut stands at 3,029 meters below the Ortler, the highest peak in South Tyrol. Founded in 1875, it has served as a base for climbers for 150 years.

On the occasion of this special anniversary, Karin Ortler, the aunt of the current hut keeper, authored the book titled " Die Julius-Payer-Hütte – 150 Jahre alpine Gastfreundschaft am Ortler". The richly illustrated work tells the lively history of the hut through historical photographs, eyewitness accounts, original documents, and press articles. It offers authentic insights into life and work at over 3,000 meters altitude through personal portraits of past generations of hut keepers.

Supported by the Touriseum a permanent exhibition has also been created to showcase the 150-year history of the Julius-Payer-Hütte. Over 20 striking images highlight the most important milestones of its history and invite visitors to discover the fascinating development of the hut.

For those who do not climb, in summer 2025, there will be an opportunity to visit the exhibition at the NATURATRAFOI visitor center.
