Conference - Green Dreams
What makes a garden a “paradise” – and for whom is it truly one? These and other questions are at the heart of the conference “Green Dreams – Gardens between Cultural History, Tourism and Sustainability.”
Inspired by the special exhibition “Designed Paradises – Of People and Gardens,” the conference brings together scholars and experts from a range of disciplines, spanning cultural and tourism history as well as current issues in landscape design and sustainability.
The presentations will explore, among other topics, the public green spaces of historic Trentino, gardens featured in Baedeker travel guides of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the tourism-shaped landscapes of Gardone Riviera. Further talks will focus on botanical journeys and early forms of nature tourism, urban landscape planning, multisensory experiences of visiting gardens, and the cultural history of walking. Turning to the present, Michaela Fenske and Arnika Peselmann ask “Whose Paradise?”
Against the backdrop of the ecological crises of the 21st century, they explore how our understanding of gardens changes when we consider not only human needs, but also those of other living beings.
In this way, “Green Dreams” presents the garden as both a historical and contemporary space of experience – as designed nature, a tourist destination of longing, and a testing ground for the question of how we want to interact with landscapes and the environment in the future.
