General description

Wallflower is one of the most traditional spring plants in historic European gardens. Its warm shades of yellow, orange, and copper appear especially vibrant, reflecting the still-soft light of early spring. A defining feature is its rich, slightly spicy fragrance, which attracts the first pollinators as early as March and brings life into the garden. With its natural, painterly habit, it evokes the charm of old cottage gardens, where it has been cultivated for centuries. Its vivid blooms create a harmonious transition between early bulbs and later spring perennials.

Care

Wallflower prefers nutrient-rich, well-drained soils with consistent but moderate moisture. It is sensitive to waterlogging, making permeable substrates essential. As a biennial, it forms a basal rosette in the first year and flowers in the second. Light pruning after the main flowering period helps maintain a compact shape. If seed heads are left in place, it readily self-seeds, creating natural, gently shifting colour displays over time.

Special features & use in the home garden

A highly ornamental and fragrant plant, wallflower is well suited to rock gardens, entrances, gravel beds, and containers. It combines beautifully with tulips, daffodils, and forget-me-nots. It brings warmth and colour early in the season and is an ideal companion for Mediterranean-style planting schemes.

In Trauttmansdorff

Wallflower can be found in the Sun Gardens, where it forms part of the first seasonal colour displays. Combined with bulb plants, it creates a vibrant start to the gardening year.
