Scenic Viewpoints Offer a Very Different Trauttmansdorff

Experience the gardens, mountains and Merano’s valley basin from above

Gardens with panoramic views! The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle site is ideal for spectacular and architecturally interesting scenic viewpoints. The gardens are located on a slope, are shaped like an amphitheater, and have an altitude difference of about 100 meters. Many sections afford visitors beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, set against a mountainous backdrop, and offer unique perspectives on the individual garden areas.

Matteo Thun’s Viewing Platform

Matteo Thun's Viewing Platform

The spectacular viewing platform, which is about 90% see-through and based upon an idea from South Tyrolean architect and designer Matteo Thun, was built in 2005: visitors “float” above the gardens, ascending towards the heavens up steps. Formed in the shape of binoculars, the platform affords breathtaking view of the Adige (Etsch) Valley, the Merano (Meran) Valley Basin and the surrounding mountains.

Aviary

Aviary

Trauttmansdorff’s highest point is home to parrots and lories: the Aviary. A dizzying, 15-meter walkway leads from a circular stainless-steel structure out into the void. There you can enjoy impressive views of the gardens, the Merano Valley Basin and the mountains. As you take it all in, you can reflect on the maxim printed on the protective barrier: “Only thoughts are free.”
