General description

Citrus plants are among the defining species of Mediterranean garden culture. Lemons, oranges, mandarins, grapefruits, and kumquats combine glossy evergreen foliage with fragrant blossoms and brightly coloured fruits. Many species flower and fruit at the same time, a characteristic that made them symbols of fertility, abundance, and eternal youth in ancient cultures.

Care

Citrus plants require warm, sunny, and sheltered positions with well-drained soil. They benefit from regular watering, although waterlogging should be avoided. During the growing season, regular feeding supports healthy growth and fruit production. In Central Europe, frost protection is essential during winter. Pruning is mainly carried out to maintain shape and improve light penetration within the crown.

Special features & use in the home garden

Citrus plants are among the most important ornamental species for terraces, courtyards, and Mediterranean-style gardens. Their blossoms are especially valued for their fragrance. Bitter orange (Citrus aurantium), for example, provides several aromatic oils used in perfumery: neroli oil from the flowers, petitgrain oil from leaves and young shoots, and bitter orange oil from the peel.

In Trauttmansdorff

Numerous citrus varieties are planted directly in the ground inside the historic Limonaia. In winter, the structure is covered and kept frost-free, following the model of the traditional limonaie of Lake Garda. On the Lemon Terrace, surrounded by lemon and orange trees, visitors experience an intensely fragrant Mediterranean atmosphere. In the Limonaia below, the scent of blossoms and ripening fruits accompanies visitors through the citrus collection.

When is it at its most beautiful?

The most impressive period is usually between April and May, when the main flowering season fills the Limonaia with fragrance while many trees are already carrying fruit.
