Tulips

General description

Tulips are among the most familiar spring flowers, bringing colour and vibrancy to gardens and landscapes year after year. Originally native to the steppes of Central Asia, they reached Europe via Turkey and quickly became true stars of garden culture. In the Netherlands in particular, a distinctive “tulip culture” emerged, shaping their image to this day. 

What makes tulips so fascinating is their remarkable diversity: there are countless cultivars in almost every colour, from soft white to deep violet, often bicoloured or delicately flamed. Their flower forms vary just as widely, ranging from simple, elegant cups to fringed or richly double blooms. Characteristic is their clear, upright form, which brings structure and a sense of order to planting schemes. 

Tulips visibly respond to light and warmth, opening their flowers in the sun and closing again in cooler conditions. Many varieties bloom early in the season, providing some of the first strong bursts of colour after winter. Planted in groups, they create vibrant swathes of colour that truly bring spring to life. 

With their combination of elegance, diversity, and expressive presence, tulips remain an essential element of spring garden design.

Care

Tulips require well-drained soil and full sun. During periods of heavy rain, improving drainage with sand or light protection can help prevent rot. Spent flowers should be removed, while the foliage should be left to die back completely. Many modern varieties need to be replanted each year, whereas botanical tulips are more robust and long-lived. A light fertilisation in early spring supports healthy growth and flowering.

Special features & use in the home garden

Tulips create spectacular carpets of colour in spring and are ideal for seasonal bedding, front gardens, and representative entrances. They combine beautifully with muscari, daffodils, and forget-me-nots. For more naturalistic plantings, botanical tulips are recommended, as they can naturalise over time.
